Description

So here are a couple more herbivores!
I wanted to show how these "stalks" came to be, so I included an antelope-like thing to accompary the rhinoceros-like browser (Let's call it Polutherium remotophtalmum, "rod beast with eyes far apart", quite fitting, eh? =D)
You can see that the gracile form already has the eyes "sticking out" to the sides and that the rest of the face is narrower, and I only pushed it to extreme in the bulkier herbivore.
The "stalks" work as observatory towers, so the animal has a good "all-around" vision of its surroundings, and its bulk doesn't hinder its ability to see behind itself.
The "stalks" are actually heavy duty, made of very solid bone to make them fracture-safe.

The males have longer eyestalks than females, and they don't ram each other during courtship, but resort to "display competition", they inflate their throats and make loud sounds to look bigger and more intimidating, and the male with longer eyestalks usually wins without fight. If there are two comparably "handsome" males, they might engage in a "sword fighting" with their eyestalks, and the weaker male retreats.

The long "rods" had an incredibly useful consequence, because the "chemoreceptory groove" lengthenned and thus both genders have incredible sense of smell, but males, with their longer "eyerods", have even keener sense of smell than females. They use it to locate fertile females over vast distances. The "post-ocular chemoreceptory groove" (the black line behind the eye of my animals - not visible here) is now on the posterior surface of the "rod", which means that this animal can "smell behind itself" too, which means that no matter the direction of wind and possition of the predator, this herbivore can smell danger with ease.

But because no animal has all senses developped to the same level, this beast's hearing is not that remarkable.

Their skull structure restricts them to savanna-like environment, but it's only the open flat plain where such sigt adaptation comes in handy.

They have bony eyelids for protection when they use their eyestalks as weapons. a side-swing of the head feels like a sledgehammer impact to the predator's ribs.

(take in mind that this rhinoceros-sized animal is not as predator-safe as rhinoceroses are, - which is why it greatly relies on sight, - because the apex predator of the plains is a horse-sized beast.)

These large herbivores can reach speeds close to 50 km/h and are surprisingly maneuverable for their size.
I imagine the "antelope" could reach speeds of a pronghorn, 90 km/h.

The "rod-eye" was greatly influenced by this:
