alien river wyrm by PeteriDish alien river wyrm by PeteriDish
I must admit I am happy how this turned out. It is similar in size to the Nile crocodile, although probably less massive, two thirds of its length are quite thin and snake-like.
The creature doesn't have a fused rostrum, sometimes nicknamed a false head, but the same bones form a set of powerful pseudojaws, incorporating the true jaws into the structure, although the true mouth is nothing more than a lamprey-esque esophagus-like funnel lined with sharp toothplates at the base of each of the pseudojaws, leading into the chest via two separate esophagi.

the pseudojaws can partially retract into the chest, they are launched forward when the creature attacks. there is a slit in the front of each pseudojaws to create a clear shot for a pair of barbed tentacle arms, which can pierce deep through the body wall of prey. they are not used all the time, being most useful for catching small swift soft-bodied prey in air and water alike.

the predator can achieve a firm grip on any large herbivore who comes to drink by a quick snap of its large serrated pseudojaws without any assistance of these internal barbs.

the "periscope" houses six eyes arranged in such a way that four can observe above the water surface and one pair can observe under the water surface and a nostril between them. as opposed to the pseudojaws, this structure can retract into the body completely, it fits perfectly between the shoulder flares of its shell and thus leaves the creature with a clean streamlined outline much more suitable for swimming.

hmmmm... hard to say, i haven't actually thought about it until now. it's meant to have terrestrial ancestors, but i don't think it comes on dry land very much

I love that you can make a head that weird and have an explanation beyond just art (not that I don't like a lot of alien designs that are mostly decorative...)

thank you very much! :) I am aiming for weird-looking aliens, that still have some underlying logic or explanation behind their shape, so it's great to see I was successful in this regard! :)

AWESOME!!  I've longed considered a similar "periscope" configuration for Stethacanthus.  I think my favorite part of this guy, other than the subsidiary limbs on the sculling "tail," is that ridge-y armored semicircular carapace immediately behind the dorsal mask.  I know this is an outrageous misinterpretation, but I'm pretending that it's a pair of bivavle jaws that open at the top--maybe the animal hovers just below the water's surface and sucks in ducks (or duck analogs) with the vacuum created when it suddenly opens its mouth beneath them?  That's what the "periscope" is for!  Aaaaannnd I think we've discovered the origins of Charybdis.  A very small, duck-eating Charybdid.

Also, MONEY SPIDERS!!

Wow, I just made a creature that looks a little like this one. It also fills a crocodile-like niche, but uses the two prongs at the front of its body to grip and deliver a strong electric shock to its prey. Mine doesn't have legs and the eyes are on the main body, but the general body plan is the same.
Convergent speculation again. :)

And its epic.:D have you thought of a variety that would make "periscope" similar to some small creature to attract the prey and then jaws would snatch it from underwater?:D

now you're thinking with portals! :D

in all seriousness, i can imagine a variety with unbarbed tentacles, resembling worms to lure small "fish" within reach, and i have thought of making the periscope look like something, but the point is to make it look like there isn't anything in the water at all XD it's hard, on one hand it sounds cool to have it mimmic something, but on the other hand i worry that this in turn will mean it's calling attention to itself rather than stealth :D

True.. but why not? There are those turtles (who'se english name I don't remember >.<) That have rather stealthy looks to hide within their surroundings and in their mouth there is colourful worm-like growth that lures prey to it's death. I think that some species in this group could evolve something similar. If the structire on the surface was convincing it could turn away the attention from what's happening inderneath.
